Gene Rosov Founder of Apple Hill Center for Chamber Music writing about a performance of all six Suitres in NH
In one of my past lives, I've played a single (one) of the Bach Suites in concert...and it's always been, for me, a huge effort, a kind of singular responsibility to Bach, music, audience and the ether. I cannot for the life of me imagine the enormous spiritual, physical, musical and emotional effort that would go into performing all SIX of the suites, in one concert. I've heard it done once (George Neikrug, my former teacher, at the New England Conservatory). George was a technical wizard, and the effort for him was, obviously and clearly, nearly beyond imagining. To do these six insanely demanding pieces on the Double Bass is a feat of musical activity few would dare. Dobbs has done it many times, in various venues. He's incredible. I urge anyone who has computer access to be there, and if you're in southwestern NH, for the sake of your enduring musical memory, do NOT miss it! This is an historic event, and doesn't happen but a few times in one's life. Blessings on you, Dobbs....and thank you for your incredible generosity.
Frank Abbate writing after attending a concert of all six Suites in NH
The experience was other-worldly! Dobbs is the one and only musician on earth who plays the suites on double bass as adapted from cello. I feel like I just went to Fenway park and watched Ted Williams, Pedro Martinez and Henry Aaron do batting practice. A very deep experience.
